Limousin is a region in the middle of France, geographically it can best be seen as the area southwest of the geographic center point of France. The capitol (prefecture) is the city of Limoges. The region has a surface of almost 17.000 km² and has approx. 722.800 inhabitants, making this the least densely populated region of the French mainland (only Corsica and French Gyana have less inhabitants per km²). The region consists of 3 departments:
  • 19 Corrèze
  • 23 Creuse
  • 87 Haute-Vienne
The region is divided into 106 districts and 747 municipalities.

The area of the region of Limousins’ characteristics are a slightly sloped environment, with many forests, a lot of water (both rivers and lakes) and lots of fresh air. The climate is moderate; the summers are not too hot and the winters are not too cold.
The heart of the Limousin region is formed by the so-called “Plateau de Millevaches”, a cool highland with many heathlands with various water springs and were small waters and rivers find their origin. The “Plateau de Millevaches” is a protected nature reserve.
The Limousin region has not yet been discovered by mass tourism, making this an interesting region for lovers of quietness. The region offers many places of interest and cultural inheritances such as ruins, castles, churches and cathedrals, convents, prehistoric caves and many interesting cities.
The French department of Corrèze is the most southern department of the Limousin region and is surrounded by the departments (23) Creuse (Limousin region), (87) Haute-Vienne (Limousin region), (15) Cantal (Auvergne region), (63) Puy-de-Dôme (Auvergne region), (46) Lot (Midi Pyrenees), (24) Dordogne (Aquitainië region).
The Corrèze department exists of 3 jurisdictions (-la-Gaillarde, Tulle, Ussel), 37 districts and 286 municipalities. There are approx. 250.000 inhabitants in this department. Corrèze is famous for its red and brown cattle, also known as Limousin cattle, which live in the forests and hills of this region.
